Welcome to Lyle, Washington
Lyle, Washington was established around 1859 and was originally called Klickitat Landing. The town was renamed in 1880 after James O. Lyle purchased the claim and platted the townsite. Lyle is located on a gravel bar from the Missoula Floods and is situated along an ancient trading route used by many Indian tribes. The first known white men to visit the area were members of the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1805. In May 1948, the Columbia River flooded, causing significant damage to the town of Lyle and the surrounding areas. The flood was one of the most devastating disasters in the region’s history. The Twin Bridges Museum is located in the former church at the intersection of Klickitat and 4th Street. The museum has artifacts donated by Lyle family descendants, including Bibles, jewelry, photographs, and a Civil War sword.
